Most of us know how important it is to use Search Engine Optimisation within our websites. However, not many people know that optimising videos can be just as important.

Always remember – YouTube is now the second most used search engine after Google. Optimise your videos properly, and they will show up in Google results.

We are using a random video of ANZ channel as an example to show you how to optimise this video better for search engines.

For example, if you want to optimise this video for “Life Insurance” related search terms, I’ll walk you through step-by-step guide as to optimise this  version of ANZ’s YouTube video so that they are able to rank higher in YouTube and Google later on.

how to optimise youtube video for seo

1.1 Video Title: Keyword-rich title should be used

Current Title: Ronnie’s Story

Proposed Title: ANZ Life Insurance  & Life Cover – Ronnie’s Surgery Story

1.2 Video Description: Targeted keywords in the description of each video should be implemented and place relevant link to the destination webpage that you want to rank for.

Current Description:

I’d always been healthy – I played soccer till I was 42, I was never overweight and always fit. So it came as a huge shock to me when I had a minor heart attack”

– Ronnie Whitton, Self-employed Draftsman

Proposed Description:

Ronnie- ANZ Life Insurance customer talked about his life insurance experience after getting a heart surgery.

“I’d always been healthy – I played soccer till I was 42, I was never overweight and always fit. So it came as a huge shock to me when I had a minor heart attack”

– Ronnie Whitton, Self-employed Draftsman

ANZ Life Insurance – getting life insurance could be easier than you think, and you’ll generally be covered straight away.

ANZ can help you arrange life insurance, which provides your family with a lump sum payment in the event of your death or permanent disability and they’re also entitled to a $15,000 Advance Assistance Benefit.

ANZ offers life cover of up to $2,250,000 while maintaining affordable premiums.

ANZ can also arrange trauma insurance, which pays you a lump sum if you suffer or are diagnosed with a serious health trauma such as a heart attack, stroke or cancer.

1.3 Tags

Tags are used to aid the discoverability of your videos, so it’s important to go for the relevant ones, not the popular tags. Useful for search terms in your title text and description, including names and branding.

Proposed Tags: life insurance, life cover, anz life insurance, life insurance quotes, life insurance companies Australia, insurance cover, disability, injury, illness, financial security, life protection, insurance claims, insurance quotes Australia, anz

1.4 Playlists

It is also a good idea to organise each video into different playlists. This is generally for better user experience for the viewers. Once they can easily find what they want to see, it is more likely that they’ll stay on the page.

Playlists should reflect the videos that are uploaded and what the channel is about and what the channel promotes.

Suggested playlists can be titled (in which videos will be organised into their relevant playlists): ANZ Life Insurance Clients’ Stories

1.5  Write a script and upload a transcript

Google will read the transcript of the video so make sure to write a script for the video & include the keyword phrases in the script. While there’s no rule of thumb about when to mention keyword phrase, earlier is always better than later.

1.6 Use YouTube Captions as a transcript alternative

If you don’t have the resources to create a video transcript from scratch, YouTube can generate crawlable closed captioning for the videos. If you take advantage of this tool, make sure you review the captions YouTube generates and make edits as needed.

I hope through this real-life example, you can better optimise your video for search engines and build backlinks from video submission sites to your website.
